'Dying To Lie' - Dust Monk Single Review

'Dying To Lie' - Dust Monk Single Review

Dust Monk are Liverpool/Warrington based Phil and Jamie, who released their debut single 'Dying To Lie' on Friday 19th March.

The unusual percussion (bongos and maracas) blends perfectly with the acoustic, laid-back sound to create a unique track which is distinctly different in today's music world.

'Dying To Lie' has the sound of a happy, vibey song but on listening to the lyrics its dark undertone is revealed. Dust Monk describe the song as a dark tale about how someone can lose all their morals when they are desperate to get what they want. The opening lyric "I don't wanna die, I just want your full attention" is an absolute genius of a line to draw you in.

The retro nostalgic feel engages the listener and gives me thoughts of palm trees, Hawaiian shirts and drinking from a coconut! For some reason, I can picture this on an American TV soundtrack based in Miami or Florida!

Dust Monk have been working with producer Jon Withnail (Coldplay, Elbow, Rihanna, The Coral) and we can expect further singles and there is even talk of an album - so watch this space, Dust Monk mean business!

Greysha - 'Gold Glaze' Single Review

19 year old, Shropshire based singer/songwriter Greysha released 'Gold Glaze' on 20th October.  A beautiful and reflective song about looking back at key events in your life. Told from the perspective of growing up it touches on lots of subjects many teenagers will recognise in themselves, not wanting to be in class, rebellious piercings, also however the more serious and poignant subjects of family and looking back at happier times.  As a subscriber to her mailing list from back when I bought the CD of her previous single 'Aspirin' , Greysha said of 'Gold Glaze' on release "I have poured my soul and a little part of who I am into this" The inflection and emotion she puts into the vocals literally make you feel this is true. A track with layered harmonies and cinematic strings, you smile and you even sing along to the "Gold Glaze" part but you also feel Greysha's pain at times..."Tell the darkness to stay back another day"  Gr...

'Salem II' EP Review

'Salem II' EP Review Grace Calver Salem are front-vamp Will Gould (also of the band Creeper) and guitarist Matthew Reynolds, they burst onto the scene with The Apathy Ball and the release of their debut single 'Destroy Me' last year. Today (Friday 7th May) they release their second EP titled 'Salem II'. One of the main things I love about them and this EP is the imagery created with the lyrics and music. The lexical fields of vampires, love and darkness that can be found through all of the songs, paired with the gothic, theatrical and punky sound.  There is an eerie start to this EP with the introduction of the first track; 'William, It Was Really Nothing' before the punchy guitars explode in. A nod to The Smiths' 'William, It Was Really Nothing', this song is a theatrical masterpiece - with dominating vocals supported by a stunning, gothic choir and powerful guitars. This contrasts beautifully with the gentle bell, piano and wind chime sou...

'Culture Non-Stop' - The Skinner Brothers EP Review

'Culture Non-Stop' - The Skinner Brothers EP Review The Skinner Brothers dropped their new EP 'Culture Non-Stop' on Friday 6th August. An indie band with an arena sound, The Skinner Brothers tell stories of football, drugs, booze, sex and love! Four explosive and individual brand new tracks make up an EP full of swagger and attitude! First up is the title track; 'Culture Non-Stop' - from the start you know this is the Skinner Brothers as Zac's distinctive vocals draw you in. With fuzzy guitar riffs and driven by the drums, this song is an upbeat swipe at the bullshit! It has an addictive quality to it - I could happily have it on repeat - and as the song itself says "I need the music in my system to feel high".   With the second track 'Told You So' we have more of a dance vibe with a definite summer festival feel coming from the guitar riff and the bass. This will fit in perfectly with the news announced yesterday that they will be perfor...
