The Great Leslie, Hawke The Band and Charlie Baker at Hot Box, Chelmsford

The Great Leslie, Hawke The Band and Charlie Baker at Hot Box, Chelmsford

On Thursday 29th September, Future Hits Radio hosted a gig at Hot Box in Chelmsford with The Great Leslie headlining. Hawke The Band and Charlie Baker were the successful support acts chosen from the Apply To Play applications.

I've been following The Great Leslie since I first started doing a music blog, so was super excited to finally see them live for the first time. Unfortunately their drummer couldn't perform as he was unwell (hope you're feeling better now Ryan!), so we were treated to a more relaxed, stripped-back and intimate performance with the band "sitting down for the first time" as singer Ollie said. They played a full set which included all their recent singles and some earlier tracks, finishing off with their latest 'All Good Things'. Highlights for me were 'Feel Alive' and my all-time favourite of their's 'Hold On To My Ex'. As a musician, I have to make a comment about the precision timing - I feel this was more noticeable because of the lack of drums, but the flawless way these guys all played together perfectly in sync was just so impressive to watch! On the 19th of October, they are supporting Franz Ferdinand in Manchester on the opening night of their UK and European Tour - these are a band that are only going to get bigger, and support slots like this prove that. Definitely on my 'Must See Again' list!

The night started off with a bang as opening act Hawke The Band took to the stage with their distinctive sound and, excitingly, two lead singers! Richard and Eoghan played keys and guitar and combined their voices resulting in an attention-grabbing performance. Hailing from Dublin, Chelmsford wasn't their local crowd, but they still managed to get us all singing along! My highlight from this set was their latest single 'Miracles' which I've played on my radio show twice.

Next up was Essex solo artist, Charlie Baker who gave us a glimpse into his life and personality through his songs and his relaxed and authentic stage presence. He gave background anecdotes about what lead to the stories told in his songs and made the audience smile. As well as performing some originals he put his own spin on some covers, including Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Plan B - which I was of course singing along to! Look forward to seeing him again.

Waterparks - The Anti Tour Show

Waterparks - The Anti Tour Show Allow the self indulgence, but I'm going to write a review of my favourite band - Waterparks, who just did an online concert through Veeps last night - The Anti Tour Show (27th March). It's been just over a year since I last saw Awsten Knight, Geoff Wigington and Otto Wood live in London, and since this they've released two further singles 'Lowkey As Hell' and 'Snow Globe' which will feature on their new album 'Greatest Hits' out May 21st.  The stage was beautiful, set up like a forest. Awsten described it as "the most romantic woods you've ever seen". There was obviously a reason behind the bikes and fire hydrants entangled in the leaves, which I'm sure will reveal itself when the album is released.  As with all Waterparks events, the recording was amazing - overseen by Jawn Rocha, who seems to meticulously plan the filming in fine detail. It's surprising how much the varying camera angles, per...

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review Tomorrow (Friday 7th May 2021) sees The Skinner Brothers drop their new EP 'Iconic'!  As their Spotify bio says, "The Skinner Brothers don't fuck about" and this 4-track EP backs up this claim! The EP explodes into action with two new tracks and two previously released singles - but with a twist. First up, the title track 'Iconic' starts with Zac Skinner's vocals and a guitar - then the beat comes in hard and we're rockin'! This is an amazing start, a track full of swag and attitude and will get the crowd chanting along "Iconic" in the build up to the final chorus. 'Iconic' is for winning the game with success against all odds "Get on it, step on it, subsonic, iconic." The second, and other brand new track is 'M.O.R.E', heavier than 'Iconic', it starts small and grows into an anthem oozing with self confidence. 'M.O.R.E' mentions getting up m...

'Salem II' EP Review

'Salem II' EP Review Grace Calver Salem are front-vamp Will Gould (also of the band Creeper) and guitarist Matthew Reynolds, they burst onto the scene with The Apathy Ball and the release of their debut single 'Destroy Me' last year. Today (Friday 7th May) they release their second EP titled 'Salem II'. One of the main things I love about them and this EP is the imagery created with the lyrics and music. The lexical fields of vampires, love and darkness that can be found through all of the songs, paired with the gothic, theatrical and punky sound.  There is an eerie start to this EP with the introduction of the first track; 'William, It Was Really Nothing' before the punchy guitars explode in. A nod to The Smiths' 'William, It Was Really Nothing', this song is a theatrical masterpiece - with dominating vocals supported by a stunning, gothic choir and powerful guitars. This contrasts beautifully with the gentle bell, piano and wind chime sou...
