'You're Welcome' - Modern Guilt EP Review

'You're Welcome' - Modern Guilt EP Review

London garage rock band, Modern Guilt released their EP 'You're Welcome' on 25th June.

It is an EP of guitar anthems with catchy hooks and riffs throughout - pure brilliance! The EP showcases the band across five tracks and includes their singles 'Hoping for the Hoping' and 'Get Along'.

My first observation is that the intros to all of these songs are so strong and amazingly addictive, although completely different, each one draws you into the song and has you invested.

'Double Denim' the opening track starts with static radio noises and mellow string sounds and synths. It then explodes into a heavier retro rock feel, with the guitars and strong vocals, featuring a fantastic guitar solo. Having watched the video that they have just released for this song, the retro feel of the song is embedded even more in my mind.

'Hoping for the Hoping',  I love a song that uses 'ooo's' - we underestimate how much they can add to the atmosphere.  Starting with a strong rhythm from both the bass and guitar, this one was maybe the catchiest on the EP for me, I loved the groovy bass throughout the song and found myself singing the oooo's and "when push comes to shove" as I danced around the room with a hairbrush.

'One-Fifty' has a repeating guitar hook intro, a lighter 60's vibe, and a cowbell, which makes any song cooler! Seriously talented guitarist in this band!

'Get Along' is possibly my favourite, if I was pushed to choose. The amazing guitar hook and solo give this one a real psychedelic feel which is just intensified by the keys and then the vocals in the chorus. Again the introduction grabs you from the start, this one is arena size, the crowd singing back the "woah's", I would love to see it!

'Shadow Boxer' is the final track, and I have to say I had a Smiths - 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' vibe from this one, which I love! I definitely felt more of the soul and blues influence here that the band mentions in their Spotify bio.

Modern Guilt are Jaz (Vocals/Guitar), Andreas (Lead Guitar), Scott (Drums), Glyn (Keys) and Dan (Bass). They say their songs are about dealing with love and mistakes. Jaz said the lyrics "are a coming to terms with who you are and how you've changed. It's about pinpointing where we stand in our own lives when things start to shift"

Over all of these tracks it has to be noted they are songs not only to dance to but to strut to! They are full of swag and attitude. The vocals are confident and bold in their delivery,  I would love to see how Modern Guilt perform these live as I have images rivaling Mick Jagger. A fantastic and original EP from a clearly very talented band, it stands out from the crowd!

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review Tomorrow (Friday 7th May 2021) sees The Skinner Brothers drop their new EP 'Iconic'!  As their Spotify bio says, "The Skinner Brothers don't fuck about" and this 4-track EP backs up this claim! The EP explodes into action with two new tracks and two previously released singles - but with a twist. First up, the title track 'Iconic' starts with Zac Skinner's vocals and a guitar - then the beat comes in hard and we're rockin'! This is an amazing start, a track full of swag and attitude and will get the crowd chanting along "Iconic" in the build up to the final chorus. 'Iconic' is for winning the game with success against all odds "Get on it, step on it, subsonic, iconic." The second, and other brand new track is 'M.O.R.E', heavier than 'Iconic', it starts small and grows into an anthem oozing with self confidence. 'M.O.R.E' mentions getting up m

Greysha - 'Gold Glaze' Single Review

19 year old, Shropshire based singer/songwriter Greysha released 'Gold Glaze' on 20th October.  A beautiful and reflective song about looking back at key events in your life. Told from the perspective of growing up it touches on lots of subjects many teenagers will recognise in themselves, not wanting to be in class, rebellious piercings, also however the more serious and poignant subjects of family and looking back at happier times.  As a subscriber to her mailing list from back when I bought the CD of her previous single 'Aspirin' , Greysha said of 'Gold Glaze' on release "I have poured my soul and a little part of who I am into this" The inflection and emotion she puts into the vocals literally make you feel this is true. A track with layered harmonies and cinematic strings, you smile and you even sing along to the "Gold Glaze" part but you also feel Greysha's pain at times..."Tell the darkness to stay back another day"  Gr

Waterparks - The Anti Tour Show

Waterparks - The Anti Tour Show Allow the self indulgence, but I'm going to write a review of my favourite band - Waterparks, who just did an online concert through Veeps last night - The Anti Tour Show (27th March). It's been just over a year since I last saw Awsten Knight, Geoff Wigington and Otto Wood live in London, and since this they've released two further singles 'Lowkey As Hell' and 'Snow Globe' which will feature on their new album 'Greatest Hits' out May 21st.  The stage was beautiful, set up like a forest. Awsten described it as "the most romantic woods you've ever seen". There was obviously a reason behind the bikes and fire hydrants entangled in the leaves, which I'm sure will reveal itself when the album is released.  As with all Waterparks events, the recording was amazing - overseen by Jawn Rocha, who seems to meticulously plan the filming in fine detail. It's surprising how much the varying camera angles, per
