'Milquetoast' - Gardner Leonard Album Review

'Milquetoast' - Gardner Leonard Album Review

Gardner Leonard are a pop punk duo from the West Midlands made up of Daryl Gardner who plays and writes the music and all instruments on the album, and Rhiannon Leonard the singer-songwriter.

Their debut album 'Milquetoast' (which is released this Friday 15th January) contains 11 tracks all recorded and written during this pandemic. This album is heavily inspired by early 2000's emo and pop punk, which in my opinion is the best music ever!

The album overall is upbeat, full of cool guitar riffs and songs that are begging to be seen live. Some tracks cover serious subjects, the obvious one being the single “Mine” released earlier this year, while others are more light and fun, such as the opening track “Wish It Was Me” which has a catchy chorus and very relatable lyrics.

My personal favourite from ‘Milquetoast’ is ‘Your Ghost’ due to the beautiful and emotional chorus and unique guitars parts. This deserved its place as Track Of The Week on BBC Introducing West Midlands.

The journey continues strongly with ‘Do It Over Again’ which makes me want to get up, jump around, shout and sing along, in contrast with the final track ‘One Two Three Four’ which starts eerily, and is much slower compared to the rest of the album. This is a dramatic and theatrical end to ‘Milquetoast’, leaving the listener thinking about their own relationships.

The duo have listed Taylor Swift and Blink 182 among others as their personal inspirations. I could feel this when listening to the album, and as a fan I also found it reminiscent of early Fall Out Boy.

The whole album is empowering and takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The word ‘Milquetoast’ can mean timid, feeble, insipid or bland which in no way describes this album, in fact this is a complete juxtaposition.

Once gigs are back, I will be first in line for a ticket to see Gardner Leonard live, and when I’m feeling dramatic and emotional this will definitely be the album I listen to!

You can presave 'Milquetoast' here.

Declan McKenna Zeros Tour

Declan McKenna Zeros Tour J1, Cambridge Junction - 23rd August 2021 "Cambridge are the OG's... everyone in this room saw me busking in the street 5 years ago." Declan McKenna appreciatively told the sold out crowd on the first night of his Zeros Tour, kicking off in Cambridge last night. With the checkerboard stage set with glitter balls and confetti cannons, the atmosphere was electric! You better believe Declan was on top form wearing his glittery suit, and the set had everything that you could have asked for. This gig was a humongous deal for me as it marked my return to indoor gigs for the first time in 18 months, and I couldn't think of anyone better to do it with than Declan! He gave the crowd exactly what they wanted with a blistering start performing 'Beautiful Faces', 'Rapture' and 'Sagittarius A*' accompanied by the confetti cannons going off, making sure that the concert literally started with a bang!  Declan appeared to be full of ...

My Favourite Memories from Gigs

My Favourite Memories from Gigs (All of these photos and videos were taken by me and are my own personal videos) With the news that concerts may be returning from 21st of June, I got myself some tickets booked, in the hopes that I may get to do some gig reviews! This got me thinking back to all the concerts I've been to before, so I've decided to share some of my favourite memories and experiences from gigs! 1. Remington Leith Concerning the Health and Safety Officials! I went to see Palaye Royale at Shepherd's Bush O2 Empire on the 21st February 2020. It was the most exciting concert I've ever been to, and it ended with frontman Remington Leith climbing up onto the balcony and hanging upside down! I was lucky enough to meet the band at their pop-up shop the next day, and Remington told me his mum wasn't impressed with the danger he was putting himself in!  2. Awsten Knight's Superpower On the 1st of February 2020, I had VIP tickets to see Waterparks in the Elec...

Greysha - 'Gold Glaze' Single Review

19 year old, Shropshire based singer/songwriter Greysha released 'Gold Glaze' on 20th October.  A beautiful and reflective song about looking back at key events in your life. Told from the perspective of growing up it touches on lots of subjects many teenagers will recognise in themselves, not wanting to be in class, rebellious piercings, also however the more serious and poignant subjects of family and looking back at happier times.  As a subscriber to her mailing list from back when I bought the CD of her previous single 'Aspirin' , Greysha said of 'Gold Glaze' on release "I have poured my soul and a little part of who I am into this" The inflection and emotion she puts into the vocals literally make you feel this is true. A track with layered harmonies and cinematic strings, you smile and you even sing along to the "Gold Glaze" part but you also feel Greysha's pain at times..."Tell the darkness to stay back another day"  Gr...
