Interview with Alfie from The Young

Interview with Alfie from The Young

The Young are a 4-piece indie rock band - Tom (guitar), George (bass), Josh (drums) and Alfie (singer), who has been kind enough to answer some questions for me.

Over lockdown, they have posted some socially distanced covers that you can watch on IGTV on their Instagram profile - the latest being an excellent cover of 'Waterloo Sunset' by The Kinks.

Their latest single 'Seeing The Life' was released on the 11th December 2020. You can find it on Spotify.

Grace: Can you tell us a story behind your latest single 'Seeing The Life'?

Alfie: Seeing the Life came together really quickly, the chorus came first and I wanted to do something with it. I had the intro riff knocking about and used that and went from there. I guess the song's mostly about being bored of everyday life and the 9-5 expectations pushed upon people. The result of being 23, angry and wanting something more.

Grace: You have some live dates scheduled for April 2021 (fingers crossed!!) Do you have a favourite story from a previous gig?

Alfie: Yeah fingers crossed! Every gig we do always has an entertaining story behind it. My favourite moment of any gig for me was looking out over a sold out crowd of people for our headline show at 'The Fighting Cocks’ for ‘This Feeling Big In 2020’ and seeing all our mates having it out down the front all singing along and on each others’ shoulders. It meant so much because it felt like a milestone for us as a band and a lot of our pals have been with us supporting the mission from the start. They’re just as important to an atmosphere at live shows. They were buzzing just as much as we were.

Grace: I watched a lot of your livestreams over Summer, I particularly loved your cover of 'Someday' by The Strokes! Is there a song by another artist that you wish you had written?

Alfie: Thank you very much! That’s a good question, there are so many songs by other artists I wish I wrote, we actually speak about it a lot as band! If I had to pick one song I wish I wrote it would be ‘There She Goes’ by The La’s I never get bored of that song.. so simple yet so beautiful. Or for obvious reason ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ by Slade.

Grace: Where did you get your music tastes from?

Alfie: I would say we got our music tastes passed down from one an another.Tom (guitar) showed me all of my favourite bands when we were kids and I showed my younger brother George (bass). Josh (Drums) would have got a love for music from his granddad who was in a band called Matchbox.

Grace: What did you want to be when you were young?

Alfie: From an early age I knew I wanted to be on stage entertaining people, the stars collided when I met Tom around the age of 11 and we decided to give it a go.

Grace: Do you have any weird/useless talents?

Alfie: I can move my ears if that counts as a talent? And Tom can flip his eyelids inside out 😂

Grace: What's happening next for The Young?

Alfie: World domination at some stage! For the meantime we’re keeping busy reaching out to as many people as possible with our new single ‘Seeing The Life’ and working on our social media presence with videos and live streams. We never really worked with social media as we’re definitely a live band rather than an Instagram band but we understand that now more than ever, having a presence online is very important. We also plan on getting back into the studio when our mate Bojo let’s us and creating another masterpiece of a single for some lovely people to wrap their ears around.

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review

The Skinner Brothers - 'Iconic' EP Review Tomorrow (Friday 7th May 2021) sees The Skinner Brothers drop their new EP 'Iconic'!  As their Spotify bio says, "The Skinner Brothers don't fuck about" and this 4-track EP backs up this claim! The EP explodes into action with two new tracks and two previously released singles - but with a twist. First up, the title track 'Iconic' starts with Zac Skinner's vocals and a guitar - then the beat comes in hard and we're rockin'! This is an amazing start, a track full of swag and attitude and will get the crowd chanting along "Iconic" in the build up to the final chorus. 'Iconic' is for winning the game with success against all odds "Get on it, step on it, subsonic, iconic." The second, and other brand new track is 'M.O.R.E', heavier than 'Iconic', it starts small and grows into an anthem oozing with self confidence. 'M.O.R.E' mentions getting up m

Greysha - 'Gold Glaze' Single Review

19 year old, Shropshire based singer/songwriter Greysha released 'Gold Glaze' on 20th October.  A beautiful and reflective song about looking back at key events in your life. Told from the perspective of growing up it touches on lots of subjects many teenagers will recognise in themselves, not wanting to be in class, rebellious piercings, also however the more serious and poignant subjects of family and looking back at happier times.  As a subscriber to her mailing list from back when I bought the CD of her previous single 'Aspirin' , Greysha said of 'Gold Glaze' on release "I have poured my soul and a little part of who I am into this" The inflection and emotion she puts into the vocals literally make you feel this is true. A track with layered harmonies and cinematic strings, you smile and you even sing along to the "Gold Glaze" part but you also feel Greysha's pain at times..."Tell the darkness to stay back another day"  Gr

Declan McKenna Zeros Tour

Declan McKenna Zeros Tour J1, Cambridge Junction - 23rd August 2021 "Cambridge are the OG's... everyone in this room saw me busking in the street 5 years ago." Declan McKenna appreciatively told the sold out crowd on the first night of his Zeros Tour, kicking off in Cambridge last night. With the checkerboard stage set with glitter balls and confetti cannons, the atmosphere was electric! You better believe Declan was on top form wearing his glittery suit, and the set had everything that you could have asked for. This gig was a humongous deal for me as it marked my return to indoor gigs for the first time in 18 months, and I couldn't think of anyone better to do it with than Declan! He gave the crowd exactly what they wanted with a blistering start performing 'Beautiful Faces', 'Rapture' and 'Sagittarius A*' accompanied by the confetti cannons going off, making sure that the concert literally started with a bang!  Declan appeared to be full of
